Umaro Sissoco Embaló announces presidential candidacy in Guinea-Bissau
Umaro Sissoco Embaló, the former president of Guinea-Bissau, has announced his intention to run in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for December 6, 2026. Embaló, who has been in exile since being ousted in a military coup on November 26, 2025, confirmed his candidacy via Jeune Afrique from Brazzaville.
He plans to return to Guinea-Bissau on October 4 to begin his campaign under the banner of the Plataforma Republicana, a coalition of more than ten political parties. Embaló expressed a desire for his return to occur in an environment of “harmony, tolerance and mutual respect,” emphasizing the need to prioritize national interest and social peace.
The country is currently under a transitional government led by General Horta N’Tam, who took power following the suspension of the electoral process last year. While some political leaders, such as Domingos Simões Pereira of the PAIGC, noted that the return of a national citizen is normal, others expressed concern that the current political suspension creates an uneven playing field for other parties. General N’Tam has stated that any Guinean citizen is free to return to the country if they have nothing to be ashamed of.
