UMass Dartmouth football player Marvins Antoine fatally stabbed in Providence

Marvins Antoine, an 18-year-old freshman running back for UMass Dartmouth, was fatally stabbed in Providence, Rhode Island, early Saturday morning. Antoine was pronounced dead upon arrival at Rhode Island Hospital.

A second student-athlete, defensive back Kensley Macean, was also injured in the attack, sustaining non-life-threatening wounds to his head and neck. He was hospitalized for treatment.

According to Providence Police, the incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. ET in a Wendy’s parking lot on Charles Street. Authorities believe the victims had been at the Mezzo Lounge earlier in the night, which had reportedly closed due to overcrowding, before a fight broke out in the parking lot.

A suspect is currently in custody. UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Mark A. Fuller issued a statement expressing condolences to the family and teammates, while reassuring the campus community that there is no ongoing threat to the university.
