College soccer: Maryland, Duke, and UMass secure home opener wins
In recent college men’s soccer action, several teams secured home opener victories despite challenging starts.
Maryland overcame a sluggish first half and an early deficit to defeat New Haven 3-2. After falling behind in the first 45 minutes, the Terrapins staged a second-half offensive surge, with goals from Henry Bernstein, Dominic Ayella, and Leon Koehl. Coach Sasho Cirovski noted the team showed necessary urgency to recover in the second half.
Duke University secured a 3-1 win against Cal Baptist, marking their second victory of the opening weekend. Following a 1-1 halftime tie, the Blue Devils pulled away in the second half with goals from freshman duo Ethan Congleton and Logan Moniz.
UMass also claimed a 3-1 victory over No. 24 UConn. The Minutemen established a commanding three-goal lead within the first 25 minutes, fueled by two goals from Thomas Wadas and one from Dylan Marco, before UConn managed a late response.
