UMBAL Burgas introduces PCR testing for meningitis and encephalitis

The microbiology laboratory at UMBAL Burgas has implemented PCR testing to identify specific viruses that cause meningitis and encephalitis. This capability makes the hospital the only facility in the region able to perform such diagnostics.

By analyzing cerebrospinal fluid, the PCR method detects the genetic material of a virus, allowing for a precise diagnosis. Dr. Kalina Tsankova, head of the microbiology laboratory, noted that because different viruses often present with similar symptoms, rapid and accurate identification is essential for effective treatment of the central nervous system. The hospital utilizes modern equipment to provide these more precise diagnostic results, building on the molecular-genetic principles previously used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
