UMBAL Plovdiv opens new emergency department

Health Minister Katya Ivkova officially opened the newly renovated emergency department at UMBAL Plovdiv. The project involved the complete reconstruction of approximately 872 square meters of the hospital building, with construction and installation works valued at 750,359.80 euros including VAT.

The new facility features a medical triage zone, consultation rooms, treatment rooms, a shock room, and areas for observation and isolation. It also includes separate entrances for outpatient patients, ambulances, and staff, as well as improved accessibility for persons with disabilities. The project was funded through the ‘Support for the Development of the Emergency Medical Care System’ project, supported by the European Regional Development Fund.

This renovation is part of a broader national modernization plan targeting 235 emergency care sites, including centers and branches, across Bulgaria. Minister Ivkova noted that 160 of these sites have already been completed, with the ultimate goal of ensuring timely and high-quality emergency medical care for 98% of the population. To ensure a smooth transition for patients, the hospital director, Yovko Chervenkov, stated that both the old and new emergency departments will operate in parallel during the initial phase.
