UMBAL ‘St. George’ performs first combined robot-assisted surgery

A multidisciplinary medical team at UMBAL ‘St. George’ hospital in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, has successfully performed a first-of-its-kind combined robot-assisted operation. The procedure addressed a patient presenting with two synchronous primary tumors located in the stomach and the kidney.

The complex oncological intervention was carried out in a single four-hour session under a single anesthesia. The surgical team utilized the Versius robotic surgical system within a specialized high-tech robotic operating room. The procedure involved a robot-assisted subtotal gastrectomy followed by a robot-assisted partial nephrectomy.

Histological testing confirmed that the two growths were distinct primary carcinomas rather than the metastasis of a single disease. The hospital reported that the minimally invasive approach facilitated a successful recovery, and the patient has since been discharged in good condition.
