Umberto I Hospital pharmacy faces access and hygiene concerns
The Associazione Plemmirio Blu has raised concerns regarding the hospital pharmacy at the Umberto I facility in Siracusa, citing significant difficulties for elderly and fragile patients.
Key issues include an inefficient queue management system. Currently, the queueing totem is located in the main hall, while the pharmacy is situated near the north exit. This forces patients, including those with mobility impairments, to travel long distances within the hospital just to obtain a number. The association is requesting a dedicated booking terminal be installed directly at the pharmacy, similar to the model used in the Urology department.
Additionally, the waiting area has been criticized for being inadequate. Patients are forced to wait outside under a canopy that is open on the sides, exposing them to rain, wind, cold, and extreme heat. The association is calling on the ASP of Siracusa and local municipal administration to implement solutions, such as climate-controlled prefabricated structures, to ensure proper hygiene, comfort, and dignity for patients.
