Umbria approves assisted suicide legislation

The Umbria Regional Assembly has approved a popular initiative law regarding medically assisted death through the self-administration of lethal drugs. The legislation, named ‘Liberi subito’ (Free Immediately), was passed with 11 votes in favor, 6 against, and 3 abstentions.

The law is dedicated to the memory of Laura Santi, a journalist from Perugia who died by assisted suicide in July 2025 after a long battle for legal recognition. The measure makes Umbria the fifth Italian region, following Tuscany, Sardinia, Emilia-Romagna, and Veneto, to implement such regulations.

Under the new law, each local health unit (ASL) will establish a permanent multidisciplinary commission to verify that applicants meet the necessary requirements. The text includes provisions to ensure that access to palliative care is guaranteed and does not delay the procedure, and it allows individuals to suspend or revoke their request at any time.

Regional President Stefania Proietti did not participate in the vote, citing a desire to maintain institutional neutrality on a matter she believes should ultimately be addressed by Parliament to ensure national homogeneity. The decision drew significant emotion in the assembly, including prolonged applause.
