Umbria economy sees rise in foreign businesses amid demographic decline

Data from the Umbria Chamber of Commerce reveals a significant shift in the region's economic landscape. As of June 2026, foreign-owned businesses account for 11.03% of the region's 89,186 registered activities, totaling 9,841 units. This represents a 20.1% increase in foreign enterprises compared to June 2016, a period during which the total number of businesses in Umbria decreased by 6.8%.

A notable trend is the rapid growth of foreign capital companies, which rose from 909 in 2016 to 2,110 in 2026, an increase of 132.1%. While the total number of foreign businesses saw a slight decrease of 1.7% between June 2025 and June 2026, capital companies within that group grew by 9%.

Simultaneously, the region faces structural economic challenges due to demographic shifts. A declining active population and an aging demographic are acting as constraints on economic growth. While employment rates and productivity have seen modest improvements, the loss of the younger, active population threatens to weaken the region's long-term capacity to generate economic value.
