Umbria implements new dementia care plans amid mental health center cuts
The Umbria Region is implementing several initiatives regarding mental health and dementia care. A new collaboration agreement has been approved between the Umbria Region and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, funded by the 2024-2026 Alzheimer and Dementia Fund. This partnership aims to strengthen training for healthcare workers and caregivers while developing prevention strategies to reduce avoidable dementia cases.
Simultaneously, the region faces local controversy in Perugia regarding the reorganization of mental health services. A pre-adopted act proposes reducing the number of mental health centers in Perugia from three to two. Critics, including local leadership and opposition members, have raised concerns that the remaining two centers are located too close to one another, potentially failing to provide adequate geographic coverage for the territory.
