Umbria regional issues involve childcare cuts and rising political pensions

In the Umbria region of Italy, local administrative decisions and political spending are facing scrutiny. In Foligno, Mayor Stefano Zuccarini’s administration is facing protests from families regarding municipal nurseries. Due to budget constraints and staffing shortages, the administration reduced nursery hours to 1:45 PM, citing the need to ensure child safety during staff strikes and maintain legal staff-to-child ratios. Parents have contested these reductions and the lack of new hires, arguing that childcare is a fundamental community service rather than a luxury.

Simultaneously, the Umbria regional assembly has spent over 2 million euros in the first six months of 2026 on pensions for former regional councilors. These payments are subject to a 100% automatic adjustment based on Istat inflation data. While ordinary workers and pensioners face difficulties maintaining purchasing power, these former officials receive guaranteed increases. For example, the highest monthly pensions rose from approximately 7,811 euros to over 7,920 euros within a year.
