Umbria small businesses lose over €1 billion in real credit value
Small businesses in the Umbria region of Italy have experienced a significant contraction in available bank credit. According to data from the Bank of Italy and Istat, processed by the Umbria Chamber of Commerce, real credit to small enterprises fell by 38.8% between December 2021 and March 2026.
While the nominal decrease in loans amounted to €651 million—dropping from €2.244 billion to €1.593 billion—the impact of inflation brings the real loss to approximately €1.11 billion. This decline has outpaced the reduction in the total number of businesses, which fell by 6.7% during the same period.
On average, the estimated credit available per company dropped from approximately €42,800 to €28,100 in comparable prices. Analysts attribute this trend to several factors, including weakened investment, lower demand for financing from companies, and increased risk aversion by lending institutions. Giorgio Mencaroni, president of the Umbria Chamber of Commerce, noted that the reduction restricts essential economic tools for a fundamental sector of the regional economy.
