UMCS opens renovated Skwer Akademicki in Lublin
The Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS) campus in Lublin has officially opened the renovated Skwer Akademicki, also known as ‘Małpi Gaj’. The project, which cost over 3 million PLN, transformed a former transit area into a multifunctional space for relaxation and social integration for both students and local residents.
The renovation included the planting of approximately 20,000 plants, including shrubs, perennials, grasses, and flower meadows, while preserving existing old-growth trees. The area features new granite paths, designer urban furniture such as sculptural benches and loungers, improved lighting, and security monitoring. A free drinking water station was also installed in cooperation with the local water utility.
Key architectural features include a monumental Corten steel gate with open doors symbolizing the university’s openness to new ideas, featuring the inscription ‘I love UMCS’ and motifs related to Maria Curie-Skłodowska. Additionally, a circular light sculpture was installed to serve as a visual attraction after dark.
