UME soldier dies in vehicle accident during Huesca wildfire response

A member of the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) died on Sunday following a vehicle accident in the Atarés ravine while fighting a massive wildfire in the Las Peñas de Riglos area of Huesca, Aragon. The military vehicle overturned, resulting in the death of one soldier and injuries to three others, one of whom was reported to be in serious condition.

The wildfire, which has been active since Monday, has affected approximately 17,500 hectares of forest and meadows. The blaze has necessitated the evacuation of 19 municipalities and over 1,000 people. Emergency operations involve more than 1,000 personnel, including firefighters and military support, as well as aerial resources including up to 40 aircraft. French firefighters have also joined the efforts to contain the flames.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Aragon President Jorge Azcón both expressed condolences to the victim's family and the UME. Local authorities in Jaca have organized a minute of silence to honor the fallen soldier. Police have detained a 28-year-old man suspected of arson in connection with the fire.
