Umeå University Study Finds Hybrid Work Boosts Employee Well‑Being
A longitudinal study conducted by researchers at Umeå University tracked 148 civil servants in a mid‑size Swedish municipality from 2017 to 2023. The analysis shows that combining office and remote work – hybrid work – improves overall work experience, with higher job satisfaction, greater control over tasks, and a stronger sense of being able to meet deadlines.
The study also reports that employees perceive their immediate supervisors as more accessible under hybrid arrangements. Lead researcher Caroline Corneliusson, a doctoral student at the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health, highlighted that the research uniquely follows the same individuals over time, providing insight that was previously missing. Findings align with earlier research suggesting hybrid models can be a sustainable solution for the future workplace.
