Umeå University study reveals ice drives iron mineral transformation

Researchers at Umeå University have discovered that brief periods of freezing and thawing significantly influence the transformation of ferrihydrite, the most reactive iron mineral found in glaciers, permafrost, and cold soils. The study, published in the journal Science, suggests that ice acts as an active geochemical reactor rather than a passive storage unit.

As climate change intensifies freeze-thaw cycles, these rapid transformations can alter how iron behaves when ice melts. Because ferrihydrite has a large surface area, it attracts nutrients, pollutants, and organic carbon. Changes in its reactivity can impact entire ecosystems, affecting everything from mountain streams to Arctic coastal regions by influencing how much bioavailable iron reaches polar oceans.
