Umhlanga Reed Dance begins in Eswatini

The 2026 Umhlanga Reed Dance has commenced at the Ludzidzini Royal Residence in Eswatini, bringing together thousands of maidens for the significant national cultural event. Participants, including the His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) Imbali, have been officially sent off following weeks of preparation and have been urged to uphold discipline, respect, and cultural dignity.

Authorities have issued specific warnings regarding the safety of the participants. National Police Commissioner Manona Masango and Acting Imbali Overseer Umfanawenkhosi Hlangabeza Mdluli warned against the exploitation or interference with the young women. Masango emphasized that those found exploiting or abusing maidens could face arrest and charges of rape under the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Act, noting that the legal age of consent is 18.

Beyond the cultural significance, the ceremony is expected to provide a substantial economic boost to local businesses in the Lobamba area. Entrepreneurs and traders anticipate increased customer traffic from visitors and spectators during the seven-day period, which includes a public holiday on August 31.
