Umno and Pas political relations face historical instability

The political relationship between the United Malays National Organisation (Umno) and Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (Pas) remains complex and historically volatile. While both parties draw from the same Malay-Muslim voter base, their alliance has frequently shifted between cooperation and confrontation based on changing power dynamics.

Historical precedents include the integration of Pas into Barisan Nasional in 1973, which led to friction and a state of emergency in Kelantan in 1977. More recently, the Muafakat Nasional alliance formed after the 2018 general election eventually reached an impasse when Pas chose to join Perikatan Nasional alongside Bersatu.

Analysts suggest that any potential reunification faces significant structural hurdles. These include zero-sum competition for rural, Malay-majority constituencies and disputes over seat delineation and candidacy rights. Experts note that while “ummah unity” is often used to promote stability, alliances may lack sustainability if they are viewed as merely seasonal or transactional for electoral gains.
