UMNO and PAS explore potential political cooperation for GE16

Political leaders and analysts are discussing the potential for a renewed strategic partnership between UMNO and PAS ahead of Malaysia’s 16th General Election (GE16). UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has proposed a “sincerity test” to evaluate cooperation, suggesting that the two parties could test their ability to work together in Terengganu, Kelantan, and Kedah based on mutual respect and honesty.

Analysts suggest that a partnership between the two Malay-based parties could offer a “win-win” scenario, potentially improving Barisan Nasional’s electoral prospects and providing greater leverage to secure top leadership positions. However, some experts caution that UMNO may prefer to avoid binding pacts in the immediate term to allow the party space to rebuild its own electoral strength and bargaining power in the Malay heartland.

While recent interactions, such as UMNO leaders attending the PAS annual muktamar in Kelantan, indicate a move toward rapprochement, challenges remain regarding seat allocations and leadership arrangements. The success of such a potential “Muafakat Nasional 2.0” may depend on which party is willing to make concessions to achieve a durable electoral pact.
