UMNO leaders defend Unity Government role and call for Malay unity

During the 2026 UMNO General Assembly, party leaders addressed the status of the Unity Government and the necessity of Malay political unity. UMNO President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasized that the party’s participation in the current administration is a strategic cooperation aimed at national stability and does not constitute a surrender of the party’s identity or principles.

UMNO Vice President Mohamed Khaled Nordin argued that UMNO is the only party capable of leading the agenda for Malay unity, asserting that political fragmentation among Malays weakens their long-term position and threatens the constitutional framework. He maintained that this unity is not intended to be racialist or exclusionary but is a political necessity to strengthen the community.

In response to calls for UMNO to exit the coalition, PKR Information Chief Fahmi Fadzil rejected such suggestions, stating that decisions regarding the government must prioritize national interest over partisan sentiment. Meanwhile, UMNO Kelantan representatives expressed their readiness to follow the President’s directives, including potential cooperation with PAS if deemed beneficial for the people of Kelantan.
