Umno seeks return to power with call for early general election

Umno is experiencing a political resurgence, shifting its focus from seeking allies to determining a winning formula to return to federal power. At its General Assembly, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi called for an earlier general election (GE16), arguing that Barisan Nasional should seek a fresh mandate to lead.

Analysts suggest this momentum is driven by the growing internal weaknesses of rivals, specifically Pakatan Harapan (PH), which faces succession issues and declining popularity for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. While Umno no longer holds its former absolute dominance, it retains significant advantages through its established nationwide organizational machinery and governing experience.

The party is also adopting a strategy of political flexibility, authorizing state leaders to discuss electoral cooperation with various parties based on local demographics. This approach aims to avoid damaging multi-cornered contests while navigating a fragmented Malay political landscape where voter loyalty is no longer guaranteed.
