UMNO urged to admit Tabung Haji governance failures after RCI report

A royal commission of inquiry (RCI) report on Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) was declassified and released, covering the fund’s management from 2014 to 2020. The 252‑page investigation found that TH concealed its true financial position, reporting a RM3.4 billion profit for 2017 when it should have recorded a RM1.4 billion net loss – a shortfall of almost RM4.8 billion. Former UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said it is “time to be honest about the governance failures” at TH and warned that excuses are a “weak defence” aimed at legitimising bad practices. He urged UMNO to acknowledge the weaknesses, showing humility and remorse, rather than relying on recent state‑poll victories. The RCI report, made public via the JAKIM portal on 29 July, includes recommendations to strengthen TH’s governance and reduce political influence in its administration.
