Šumperk municipal office hit by cyberattack, services disrupted

Šumperk cyberattack municipal office data breach criminal investigation

On 28 July 2024 an unknown attacker breached the computer network of the municipal office in Šumperk, Czech Republic. The intrusion bypassed security measures and disabled the internal information system, limiting the office’s ability to process electronic services and forcing some tasks onto paper.

Police opened a criminal investigation for unauthorized access and interference, and a formal complaint was filed. The municipality reported the incident to the National Cyber and Information Security Authority (NUKIB) and is checking whether any data was leaked. Public services have now been restored, with only minor internal technical issues remaining.

Officials noted that similar large‑scale attacks have affected other towns in the Olomouc region, including Olomouc in April 2021 and Uničov in July 2023, where hackers demanded sizable payments in cryptocurrency but received none. Czech cyber‑crime clearance rates in 2024 were reported at 15.4 %.
