Riyadh airport attacks cause major flight disruptions and Umrah travel delays
Attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, claimed by the Houthi group, have caused significant aviation disruptions in Saudi Arabia. The strikes resulted in at least 12 to 13 deaths and over 300 injuries. Consequently, the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) suspended operations at the Riyadh hub for safety verification, with the closure extended until October 17, 2026. The disruptions have grounded more than 3,000 flights.
The security situation has led to widespread travel changes. Major airlines, including Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways, have cancelled or adjusted flights to various Saudi cities. In the UAE, Umrah travel demand has declined as pilgrims express concern over flight cancellations and safety.
Several governments have issued advisories. Malaysia has urged citizens to postpone Umrah pilgrimages and non-essential visits to Makkah and Madinah. Similarly, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) advised Singaporeans to postpone travel due to increased risks. In Indonesia, 53 Umrah pilgrims from Makassar faced delays after connecting flights to Madinah were cancelled. Despite these disruptions, reports indicate that daily activities in Makkah and Madinah remain normal.
