UMSNH sets record with 14 patents under Rector Yarabí Ávila

The Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH) announced that 14 of the 23 patents ever registered by the institution were obtained during the current administration of Rector Yarabí Ávila González, representing about 60 % of its total historic output. In the current year the university received four patent titles from the Instituto Mexicano de la Protección Industrial (IMPI), adding to ten titles granted in 2025. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also awarded two new blackberry varieties, “Elena” and “Littlefey,” developed by the Faculty of Agrobiology.

The record follows the 2023 creation of the Department of Liaison, Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property Protection within the Coordination of Scientific Research, aimed at supporting researchers in patent filing and IMPI procedures. The patents span chemical‑biological fields and involve the Faculties of Chemical‑Pharmaceutical Biology, Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics, and the Institute of Chemical‑Biological Research.
