Umweltbundesamt to receive 40 new positions for CO2 border adjustment

The German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA) is set to receive 40 new positions as part of the 2027 federal budget. According to parliamentary sources cited by Politico, the agency's personnel budget is expected to increase by approximately 10.8 million euros compared to the previous year, bringing the total budget to over 154 million euros.

The expansion is primarily driven by the need to manage the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). This system, which functions similarly to a tariff on carbon-intensive imports, aims to offset competitive disadvantages faced by EU companies due to emissions trading. A UBA spokesperson previously noted that existing staff levels would be insufficient for the long-term implementation of CBAM.
