UN adopts global safety framework for autonomous vehicles

UN members, through the UNECE, approved the first worldwide technical regulations for Automated Driving Systems (ADS). The rules require manufacturers to demonstrate that their self‑driving technology achieves at least the safety level of a competent human driver. Approval will be based on a multi‑stage safety case covering defined operating conditions, audits, simulations, test‑track trials and real‑world testing, as well as ongoing data reporting on mileage, incidents and software updates.

The framework also sets standards for the human‑machine interface, mandating clear warnings for driver takeover and a stop‑request function for fully driverless vehicles. While the regulations now exist at the UN level, they must still be incorporated into national law. Industry players such as Mercedes-Benz see the move as a step toward offering robotaxi services using the new S‑Class platform.
