UN agencies mark second global World Food Safety Day

The United Nations is marking the second global World Food Safety Day on June 7, 2020. Led by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), the initiative focuses on the theme ‘Food safety: everyone’s business!’.

The campaign emphasizes that food safety is a shared responsibility involving governments, industry, producers, business operators, and consumers. To prepare for the day, FAO and WHO will host a virtual celebration on June 5, featuring video messages from FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, alongside an interactive Facebook live session with experts.

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the necessity of monitoring food safety and adapting systems to manage supply chain disruptions. The event honors those working to ensure that safe food remains accessible and that supply chains continue to provide healthy diets despite global crises.
