UN AI expert Román Orús calls for slowdown in technology development
Román Orús, a member of the United Nations International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence, has called for a slowdown in the rapid development of AI technology. Orús, who serves as the scientific director of Multiverse Computing, emphasized the need for AI to remain under human supervision to ensure it serves humanity rather than controlling it.
Orús warned that current AI models are becoming so powerful that they are not yet being controlled efficiently. He advocated for increased research into training methods, enhanced supervision, and the implementation of early warning systems and multiple security layers to prevent potential disasters. His stance aligns with recent calls from other industry leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI's Sam Altman, and xAI's Elon Musk, regarding the growing security risks associated with the technology.
