United Nations AI for Good Summit 2026 Highlights Global AI Governance Efforts

The United Nations hosted the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva from July 7‑10, 2026, marking its ninth annual gathering. Organized by the International Telecommunication Union, the summit featured more than 50 UN agencies, over 100 exhibitors and a range of forums on deploying artificial intelligence responsibly. Key remarks came from ITU Secretary‑General Doreen Bogdan‑Martin, who emphasized AI’s potential to address hunger, disease and climate change, and from industry leaders such as Amazon CTO Werner Vogels.

During the summit the AI for Good Global Commission was launched, comprising 44 founding members from governments, international organisations and the private sector. Africa secured eight seats on the commission, with Rwandan President Paul Kagame appointed co‑chair alongside Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff. Other African representatives included ministers from Nigeria, Namibia and Togo, and the African Union’s infrastructure commissioner. The commission’s mandate is to guide equitable AI access, build trust in AI systems and ensure developing countries have a voice in global AI policy.

Business stakeholders also participated. The United States Council for International Business (USCIB) contributed to the inaugural UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance, urging inclusive, interoperable approaches and supporting a joint business statement coordinated by the International Chamber of Commerce. Critics at the event warned that unchecked corporate control could widen inequality, citing protests over alleged misuse of AI by Israel and concerns about export controls on advanced AI models.

Overall, the summit combined technical showcases, policy debates and civil‑society critiques, underscoring the growing importance of multistakeholder governance for AI technologies worldwide.
