UN Announces Seven-Point Climate Roadmap at London Climate Action Week

United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres presented a seven‑point plan during London Climate Action Week, calling for an accelerated global energy transition. The roadmap highlights the urgent need to cut methane emissions, which account for about one‑third of warming and are 80 times more potent than CO₂, and urges steep greenhouse‑gas reductions this decade to reach net‑zero by 2050.

Guterres emphasised recent cost declines—solar prices down nearly 90 %, on‑shore wind over 70 %, and battery storage 95 %—as proof that a clean exit from fossil fuels is feasible. He appealed to G20 nations, responsible for 80 % of emissions, to lead the effort, and announced new measures such as ending subsidies for new fossil‑fuel projects and imposing AI‑related environmental regulations. Large technology firms will be required by 2030 to disclose and reduce the carbon, water and land footprints of their data centres, which otherwise could consume water equivalent to the basic needs of 1.3 billion people in sub‑Saharan Africa.
