UN appoints Cameroonian Njoya Tikum as Resident Coordinator in Burkina Faso

The United Nations has named Cameroonian diplomat Njoya Tikum as the new Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Burkina Faso. He presented his letters of credence to Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré on 31 July 2026, formally assuming the role after being appointed by UN Secretary‑General António Guterres on 18 July 2026. Tikum succeeds Maurice Azonnankpo, who had been acting since the departure of Carol Flore‑Smereczniak in August 2025, and follows a period of strained relations after the expulsion of two previous UN coordinators in 2022 and 2025. Prior to this posting, he led the UN Development Programme’s regional office for West and Central Africa from Dakar. In his remarks, Tikum pledged to align UN activities with Burkina Faso’s national priorities for sovereignty, peace and development, signalling a renewed phase of dialogue between the government and the UN.
