UN calls for expanded aid and dignity for Gaza civilians

United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher told the Security Council that while the cease‑fire has allowed about 100 aid trucks per day and modest improvements, Gaza’s population still lacks basic necessities. He noted that the share of families facing starvation has fallen from over 90% to 36%, but 70% still need adequate shelter, clean water and electricity. The World Health Organization says no hospital is operating at full capacity, and UNICEF warns that 1.1 million children lack reliable water.

Fletcher warned that ending hostilities alone is insufficient. He urged the international community to open all crossing points, lift restrictions on medical equipment, fuel and spare parts, and restore dignity to Gaza’s residents. Since the cease‑fire began, roughly 1,000 Palestinians have been killed, including more than 250 children, and about 600 humanitarian workers have died over three years – more than half of the global total of aid‑worker fatalities.
