UN chief expresses grief over deadly Nepal and Tibet flash floods
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed grief over the loss of life caused by sudden flash floods in Nepal and Tibet. According to local media reports, at least 157 people have died in three districts of Nepal due to flooding in the Bhote Koshi River.
The disaster was triggered when an avalanche blocked the flow of the Lhendhe, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi, impacting the Timure area near the Nepal-China border. Because there were no prior rain warnings, many residents were caught unprepared.
Hundreds of people remain missing, including 391 tourists and 44 security personnel. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated that the United Nations is supporting the government-led response and is working to assess the scale of the disaster to provide immediate humanitarian assistance, including essential supplies and personnel.
