UN Climate Chief Simon Stiell Warns of Escalating Global Climate Emergencies

UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell said the climate alarm is blaring from every direction, warning that the world is entering a wave of climate emergencies. He highlighted record‑breaking wildfires tearing through France, Spain and other parts of southern Europe, forcing mass evacuations and hurting regional economies, as well as extreme heat in North Africa approaching 49 °C and a historic 40 °C heat streak in Japan.

Stiell also cited deadly storms in Chile and the trans‑continental impact of wildfire smoke from Canadian fires, which has reached the United States and Europe, underscoring growing health and energy‑system strain. He urged rapid phase‑out of coal, oil and gas, faster scaling of renewables and stronger protection for vulnerable communities.
