Yemen faces high risk of renewed war, UN envoy warns
UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg has warned the UN Security Council that Yemen faces its highest risk of returning to full-scale war since the 2022 truce. He reported intensified military activity across various front lines, including Marib, Hadramout, and al-Makha, resulting in both civilian and military casualties.
Grundberg highlighted that Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden threaten to draw Yemen into a broader regional conflict. He emphasized that the Yemeni economy, already decimated by a decade of war, has little capacity to absorb further shocks.
The envoy urged all parties to immediately de-escalate, pursue a robust ceasefire, and ensure the freedom of navigation. He also called for economic cooperation to allow commercial vessels to reach Yemeni ports, resume oil exports, and restart flights to Sanaa airport.
