UN expert Sidoti warns Gaza situation is not a real ceasefire

Chris Sidoti, a member of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, stated that the situation in Gaza does not constitute a real ceasefire. He described the agreement reached in October 2025 as merely a “reduction in fire,” noting that civilian killings and military operations continue.

Sidoti reported that the Israeli military has steadily increased its occupation of the Gaza Strip. While 50% of the territory was occupied in October 2025, that figure has risen to between 67% and 70%, forcing approximately 2 million civilians into increasingly smaller geographic areas. He emphasized that living conditions have become nearly impossible for the population.

Regarding humanitarian aid, Sidoti noted that while there has been a partial improvement in the availability of food, water, and medical supplies compared to previous periods, the volume remains far below actual needs. He criticized the rejection of essential items like tents and shelter materials on the grounds that they could be used for military purposes. He specifically noted a lack of evidence regarding claims that children's kites are being used for military threats, suggesting such restrictions are part of a broader campaign to make life in Gaza unsustainable.
