UN experts warn of potential EU pesticide regulation weakening

Five independent experts from the UN Human Rights Council have issued a warning regarding the European Commission’s proposed Food and Feed Safety Omnibus. In a letter dated October 7, 2026, the experts expressed concerns that proposed changes to pesticide and biocid regulations could undermine environmental and health protections, potentially impacting human rights.

A primary point of criticism is the proposal to approve most plant protection active substances indefinitely. The experts fear that removing mandatory periodic reviews will make it harder to detect risks that emerge during use. While the Commission argues the changes aim to reduce administrative burdens and free up resources for evaluating new substances, the experts warn that such measures could extend human exposure to harmful substances.

The warning specifically highlights risks to farmers, agricultural workers, and rural populations, noting the particular vulnerability of women and children. The experts suggest that weakening protective rules without providing support for safer, sustainable farming practices could increase dependency on hazardous substances and affect the right to life and health.
