United Nations adopts resolution promoting Equal Earth map projection
The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution to promote more accurate world map projections, specifically encouraging the use of the Equal Earth projection. The initiative, led by Togo on behalf of the African Group and supported by the African Union, aims to address the distortions caused by the traditional Mercator projection.
The Mercator projection, designed in 1569 for maritime navigation, tends to enlarge landmasses near the poles while shrinking those near the equator. This results in significant visual discrepancies, such as making Greenland appear similar in size to Africa, even though Africa is approximately 14 times larger. Supporters argue that these distortions influence collective perceptions and education by minimizing the perceived scale of Africa, Latin America, and South Asia.
The resolution is nonbinding and encourages governments, educational institutions, media, and technology companies to adopt area-equivalent projections. The vote passed with 164 in favor, one against, and six abstentions. The United States was the sole country to vote against the resolution, with its representative describing the move as a ‘radical ideological project’ that detracts from the UN’s core responsibilities.
