UN General Assembly passes landmark climate accountability resolution

The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a climate‑accountability resolution, voting 141 in favour and 8 against. The motion, driven by Vanuatu and supported by a coalition of small island and developing states, endorses the International Court of Justice’s 2025 advisory opinion that states have a legal duty under international law to curb greenhouse‑gas emissions and prevent further climate harm. Eight nations, including the United States, Russia and Saudi Arabia, opposed the text. The adoption is hailed as a turning point for vulnerable island nations such as Mauritius, which contributed little to global emissions but faces severe sea‑level rise, coastal erosion and extreme weather. Officials say the resolution strengthens climate‑justice arguments and could shape future legal actions, financing and international negotiations on climate change.
