UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance convenes in Geneva

The United Nations held its first Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva on July 6‑7, co‑chaired by Estonia and El Salvador. The two‑day event gathered more than 4,000 participants, including heads of state, ministers, companies, researchers and civil‑society groups, to discuss responsible, inclusive and transparent AI use. Four thematic sessions addressed AI’s role in sustainable development, narrowing the digital divide, building safe, trustworthy, human‑centric AI under international law, and strengthening international cooperation.

Estonia’s permanent representative Rein Tammsaar emphasized the need for global cooperation, while President Alar Karis led the Estonian delegation. The dialogue was mandated by UN member states through the 2024 Pact for the Future and the Global Digital Compact, receiving over 1,500 written submissions during its preparatory phase.

A high‑level Sri Lankan delegation, led by Dr Hans Wijayasuriya, participated in the dialogue, with ambassadors and senior officials present. The opening session featured keynote addresses by UN Secretary‑General António Guterres and General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, underscoring the urgency of a fair global digital order. Sri Lanka also engaged in related events such as the WSIS Forum and the AI for Good Global Summit 2026.
