United Nations human rights chief Volker Türk has called for accountability following the deaths of 23 migrants in US immigration custody during 2026. Recent reports indicate that four additional deaths have occurred since June.

Addressing the UN Human Rights Council, Türk urged Washington to halt deportations to countries where individuals might face “irreparable harm,” specifically mentioning Haiti. He also expressed concern regarding the US government's ability to deport individuals to third countries when they cannot be returned to their nations of origin.

Furthermore, the UN raised alarms over a Department of Homeland Security proposal to equip Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents with electric shock gloves. The project, estimated to cost between $10 million and $20 million, has sparked fears that such equipment could increase violence during enforcement operations.

Human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch and Physicians for Human Rights, have noted that mortality rates in ICE detention have reached their highest levels in over a decade since the return of the Trump administration in January 2025.
