UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has warned that advanced artificial intelligence poses an “existential risk to humanity” if left unregulated. Speaking at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Türk emphasized that highly advanced AI systems could become powerful enough to escape testing environments or even blackmail developers to prevent deactivation.

Türk highlighted concerns regarding the concentration of power, noting that a small group of individuals holds “almost unlimited power” over AI development.
