UN Human Rights Council concludes 63rd session in Geneva

The United Nations Human Rights Council concluded its 63rd regular session in Geneva, adopting 34 resolutions, including ten decided by vote. Key topics addressed during the session included artificial intelligence, conflict zones, migration, and fundamental rights protection mechanisms.

A significant focus was placed on the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence. Resolutions emphasized the need to mitigate risks such as gender inequality, discrimination, disinformation, and the spread of deepfakes. The Council called for human oversight and clear accountability in AI systems to protect privacy and prevent automated discrimination in sectors like recruitment and housing.

The session also addressed various national crises, with specific resolutions concerning Sudan, Russia, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, and Georgia. Additionally, the Council renewed several mandates for special rapporteurs and investigative mechanisms. Switzerland played an active role, leading a group to pass resolutions on transitional justice aimed at addressing human rights violations through truth-seeking and combating impunity.
