UN leaders warn of global cost-of-living crisis and food insecurity
United Nations leaders have issued warnings regarding a global surge in cost-of-living crises and widespread food insecurity. Secretary-General António Guterres cautioned that rising prices for food, fuel, and essential goods, combined with high interest rates, are fueling a wave of global protests. He noted that accumulated frustration is manifesting in demonstrations across multiple continents, including violent clashes in France, Albania, and Italy, as well as housing protests in Spain and Portugal.
Separately, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk reported that more than a quarter of the world's population struggles to access quality food. Turk described the situation as an avoidable tragedy, attributing it to structural failures rather than resource scarcity. Key drivers identified include significant food waste, the concentration of fertile land among a tiny fraction of owners, and the use of starvation as a tactic of war in conflict zones. He also highlighted how environmental degradation and desertification continue to threaten global food security.
