UN Ocean Report Shows Accelerating Decline, Sparking Global Policy Push

The United Nations released the third Global Ocean Assessment, the most comprehensive study of ocean health to date. Contributions from more than 550 scientists in 86 countries reveal a worsening state, with 16% of the total ocean‑temperature rise occurring after 2018. UN Secretary‑General António Guterres warned that the oceans link humanity, climate and economies, urging coastal states to prevent pollution and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems.

In Brazil, the Senate held a historic session devoted solely to the ocean agenda. Officials highlighted the need for integrated science, governance and innovation, showcasing a Digital Twin of the South Atlantic developed with Mercator Ocean International. Lawmakers also discussed the newly effective High Seas Treaty, which covers about 64% of the world’s oceans and establishes mechanisms for marine protected areas and impact assessments. Both events underscore growing international effort to safeguard the seas.
