UN officials call for economic support and end to Israeli violations in Syria

During a UN Security Council session in New York, Claudio Cordoni, Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, emphasized that economic stability is essential for a successful transition in Syria. He noted that the lifting of sanctions has created new opportunities for investment and financial cooperation. Key financial support includes 620 million euros from the European Union and 175 million USD from the World Bank for agricultural projects.

The United Nations is currently discussing a reconstruction conference with the Syrian government based on national priorities. Cordoni also commended the Syrian government's initiative to develop a national action plan to combat hate speech while respecting freedom of expression.

Regarding security and sovereignty, Cordoni and various international representatives called for an end to Israeli military violations in southern Syria, including shelling and the establishment of checkpoints. They urged respect for Syria's sovereignty and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.

On the humanitarian front, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Mohammed Yahya reported that approximately 1.82 million Syrian refugees and 2.04 million internally displaced persons have returned to their areas. However, he noted that the emergency humanitarian response is currently only 32% funded, and since December 2024, explosive incidents have resulted in 2,576 casualties, including roughly 900 deaths.
