UN Peacekeepers killed in South Sudan ambush FAST-MOVING
Two Ethiopian UN peacekeepers were killed and seven others injured during an ambush on a United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) patrol in Jonglei State on Monday, August 24, 2026. The patrol was reportedly traveling toward Pajut when it was attacked by unidentified armed individuals.
The seven injured include three peacekeepers, two members of the South Sudan National Police Service, and two civilian staff members. UNMISS has deployed a Quick Reaction Force to secure the area and assist with emergency responses. Anita Kiki Gbeho, head of UNMISS, condemned the violence as unacceptable and called for a swift investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
The United Nations has noted that such deliberate attacks against peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law. India has strongly condemned the incident, calling for an immediate investigation and urging adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 2589 regarding accountability for crimes against peacekeepers.
