UN peacekeepers find nearly four tonnes of explosives near Houla, southern Lebanon
UNIFIL discovered around four tonnes (approximately 4,000 kg) of explosive material during a routine patrol on 2 July near the village of Houla, a border settlement in southern Lebanon that lies in a 10‑km wide zone under Israeli control. The explosives were stored in 385 abandoned containers and were composed mainly of ammonium nitrate.
UNIFIL specialists neutralised the material on site and removed the danger, with mission commander Lt‑Gen Diodato Abagnara stating that each safely eliminated threat improves security and long‑term stability in the area. The announcement came only days before the sixth anniversary of the 4 August 2020 Beirut port explosion, which killed about 220 people and injured 6,500.
The find underscores ongoing security concerns along the Lebanon‑Israel border and the legacy of ammonium‑nitrate storage hazards in the country.
