UN Rapporteur Francesca Albanese Blocked in Germany as She Criticizes Israel’s Gaza Policies

In Germany, United Nations special rapporteur Francesca Albanese, who monitors the occupied Palestinian territories, has encountered organized resistance to her public appearances. The Deutsch‑Israelische Gesellschaft (DIG), a lobbying group with ties to German politicians such as Green MP Lisa Badum and CDU MP Jürgen Hardt, has worked to prevent Albanese from speaking in the country. The DIG received targeted public funding from the German Foreign Office amounting to roughly €640,000‑€650,000 last year.

Albanese also gave a recent interview in which she described Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide, citing attacks on civilians, health workers and journalists, and the blockade of humanitarian aid. She highlighted the case of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Gaza hospital director detained by Israeli forces and allegedly subjected to torture. Albanese criticized the United Nations and the International Criminal Court for their inability to enforce international law, and called for stronger accountability for Israel’s conduct in the occupied territories.
